S.A.L.I.E.N.T.

An AI-powered project discovery assistant that helps potential clients scope engineering projects through natural conversation.

Client: Salvatorre (Internal Product) Year: 2026

What is S.A.L.I.E.N.T.?

Sal's Artificial Liaison in Expertise, Nous, & Tech

S.A.L.I.E.N.T. is an AI assistant that lives on this website. It's designed to be a virtual version of me — trained on my experience, services, and portfolio — so potential clients can have a real conversation about their project before we ever hop on a call.

Rather than filling out a generic contact form, you talk to S.A.L.I.E.N.T. like you'd talk to me. Describe your project, ask questions, and get honest feedback about whether I'm the right fit.

Avatar

S.A.L.I.E.N.T. — AI caricature of Sal with holographic glow

The avatar is derived from a picture of me, digitized with a holographic glow effect in greens and reds. The look is intentional — the glowing, stylized aesthetic signals that you're talking to an AI, not a human. The green and red color palette ties into the site's overall theme, which is rooted in my Italian heritage.

How It Works

S.A.L.I.E.N.T. is powered by Google Gemini — specifically the Gemini 2.5 Flash model. I'm fully transparent about that. It's not a black box pretending to be human. It's an AI tool that I've built and tuned to represent my expertise accurately.

The Conversation Flow

There are two ways to start a project on this site:

  1. Conversational Mode — Talk directly to S.A.L.I.E.N.T. in a natural chat interface. It asks the right questions and extracts project details organically from the conversation.
  2. Guided Wizard — A step-by-step form that walks you through project type, timeline, budget, and pain points. At the end, S.A.L.I.E.N.T. takes everything you've entered and generates a personalized AI recommendation — including relevant experience from my portfolio, timeline and budget estimates, and an honest assessment of fit.

S.A.L.I.E.N.T. is the AI behind both experiences — powering the conversation in chat mode, and generating the tailored recommendation at the end of the guided flow.

After the AI Summary

Once S.A.L.I.E.N.T. generates a recommendation, the next step is a contact form. After you submit, both you and I receive an email with the full conversation — the project details, the AI analysis, and the chat history. Nothing gets lost.

Here's what those emails actually look like:

What I Receive (Lead Notification)

What You Receive (Confirmation)

Calendly Integration

Both emails include a link to book a discovery call directly on my Calendly. The confirmation page after submitting the wizard also has a prominent "Schedule Your Discovery Call" button. No waiting for me to respond — if you're ready to talk, you can get on the calendar immediately.

Under the Hood

  • Prompt Engineering — S.A.L.I.E.N.T. has extensive system prompts embedding my full service catalog, pricing philosophy, past projects, and technical capabilities. It's designed to stay within the services I actually offer.
  • RAG-Style Context — Rather than vector search, the system embeds my complete portfolio and expertise directly into prompts. The context is small and stable enough that this approach is both simpler and more reliable.
  • Structured Data Extraction — In conversational mode, every response from Gemini includes structured JSON with extracted project details, progress tracking, and suggested quick-reply buttons — all parsed server-side.
  • Intelligent Categorization — For users who aren't sure what they need, S.A.L.I.E.N.T. can categorize freeform project descriptions into the right service areas with confidence scoring.
  • Topic Guardrails — S.A.L.I.E.N.T. keeps the conversation focused on scoping engineering projects with me. It won't go off-topic, answer unrelated questions, or get sidetracked — it's here to help you figure out if we're a good fit to work together.
  • Abuse Prevention — Rate limiting, content safety filters, and input validation protect against misuse. The system is designed to handle bad actors gracefully without compromising the experience for legitimate users.
  • Sales Intelligence — S.A.L.I.E.N.T. doesn't just collect project details — it reads between the lines. Through natural conversation, it picks up on behavioral signals and buying intent, helping me understand not just what you need, but how you make decisions. This means better follow-ups, faster alignment, and less wasted time on both sides.
  • Graceful Fallbacks — If the AI fails or returns unparseable responses, the system degrades gracefully to guided form components rather than breaking.

The Name

The word "salient" means prominent or standing out. But there's a deeper connection: in electrical engineering, a salient pole is a motor/generator design where poles project outward from the rotor. It's a subtle nod to my decade of experience in power electronics and motor control — the foundation of my engineering career.

Why I Built It

Most engineering services websites have a contact form and maybe a services page. The problem is that potential clients often don't know exactly what they need, and a static form can't guide them.

S.A.L.I.E.N.T. solves this by meeting clients where they are. Whether they have a detailed spec or just a vague idea, the assistant helps them articulate their needs and understand what's possible — all before taking up anyone's calendar time.

This isn't a one-off experiment. S.A.L.I.E.N.T. is a proof of concept for what AI-powered client engagement can look like for service businesses. Read more about the problems it solves and where this concept could go in the announcement blog post.

If you run a solutions company, agency, or any business where understanding client needs is the first step — I can build a version of this for you. Your expertise, your services, your voice — powered by AI that actually knows your business.
